About Marilyn

I have a great deal of experience of teaching English to non-native speakers. Through my work, I am comfortable communicating with people who do not have English as their first language. I am a psychotherapeutic counsellor and I work within a pluralistic framework so I can tailor the therapy to best suit your individual needs. I have experience with working with clients who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, grief, relationship issues, inner child, anxiety, depression, and work-related stress.

Learn more about Marilyn

After many years teaching in the adult education sector, I decided to take my career in a different direction as I found I enjoyed the pastoral side of teaching. I therefore undertook a Master's in psychology, then trained to become a psychotheraputic counsellor. I work in a pluralistic way: incorporating elements of CBT, psychodynamic and person-centred to better help fulfill the clients' individual needs.

Working with individuals whose first language isn't English is a passion of mine. My ESOL qualifications experience means I can communicate well with those whose English is not fluent.

I have experienced working with survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse from my time on placement at a domestic abuse charity. I also have experience of working with clients who have undergone a relationship breakdown. Furthermore, I have counselled clients who are working through issues in their childhood and with presenting issues such as grief, anxiety, depression and work related stress. I have also completed CPD on inner child work.

I am passionate about helping those who reside in the Newcastle area to work through their issues in a safe and calm environment. Being inclusive and non-judgmental is at my core and I am able to listen to and support clients to work through their issues.

In 2024, we successfully delivered a South Tyneside project funded by First Port. We worked with referral partners Bilton Hall Community Trust, STARS, WHiST, Impact Family Services, Your Voice Counts and RE-CO-C0 to provide vital emotional and psychological support to individuals on low incomes in the South Tyneside area, ensuring access to professional counselling that would otherwise be unaffordable or unavailable.

This year we have delivered Rise and Thrive, a project funded by the National Lottery. The project provided one-to-one counselling sessions and facilitated support groups specifically for women on low incomes who are unable to access counselling elsewhere, creating safe and inclusive spaces for personal growth and recovery. Working in partnership with local organisations including On The Up, Women’s Aid, and East End Women, the project reached some of the most marginalised members of the community, offering tailored, trauma- informed support that promotes well-being, resilience and social connection.

If you would like to work with me, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I look forward to joining you on your counselling journey.
